LIFX Color 1000 A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb

It seems like tech companies can put Wi-Fi in darn near anything these days so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to me that they have figured out how to put Wi-Fi in a light bulb. Surprise or not, I think it’s pretty cool.

For the past few weeks, I have been personally testing the LIFX Color 1000 A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb which is one such bulb that has Wi-Fi built into it.

What’s the advantage of having a light bulb, like the LIFX Color 1000 A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb, with built-in Wi-Fi? Well, there are several. For starters, you can completely control every aspect of the light using an app on your smartphone. With the LIFX app [iOS | Android | Windows] you can set up timers for when your LIFX light comes on and when it goes off. You can also control the color of the light. If you’re not a fan of bright white light, just dial the color down to a more yellow light. Or go crazy and turn the light red, green, blue or any other color you can dream up. If your heart so desires, have the light come on yellow in the morning and blue at night.

Or, if you still can’t decide, choose from one of the several “scenes” in the app such as Peaceful, Relaxing, Energizing or Soothing.

You can also set the LIFX Color 1000 A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb to come on gradually if you are one of those people that likes to be awoken by gentle light. Same goes at night. You can set the LIFX Color 1000 A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb to slowly turn off as you fall asleep.

Setup

The LIFX Color 1000 A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb is pretty easy to set up. You just pop out your traditional light bulb and pop the LIFX bulb in its place. Then you turn on the light and use the LIFX app to “discover” the light bulb. You can control as many of the LIFX bulbs as you want within the app. So if you want one for your bedroom, one for your living room and one for your home office, knock yourself out. They can all be controlled independently as far as when the lights come on and what color they emit. Or you can use the “master” on/off button to turn all bulbs on or off at once.

I did find that the app itself could use a little work. I often found myself taking a few extra steps than I thought should be necessary to program a bulb. I’m hopeful that with future updates to the app, they address these inefficiencies.

I also discovered one thing that I didn’t like about the LIFX Color 1000 A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb although I’m fairly certain this would apply to any Wi-Fi light bulb, not just the one from LIFX. That is, you have to leave your light in the “on” position at all times and then use the app to manually turn the light on or off. To be fair, you still can use the switch to turn the light on or off manually but if you don’t leave it in the “on” position, the app can’t connect to the bulb meaning your on/off timers will be rendered useless.

High cost, long life tradeoff

Don’t expect to run down to your local big box store to pick up a pair of the LIFX Color 1000 A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb for $10. As of this writing, each LIFX Color 1000 A19 Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb costs $59.99 on Amazon.com. That’s a steep price to pay for a light bulb. The good news is that the life expectancy of the bulb itself is 22.8 years (based on 3 hours/day).
