Watch your DVDs on your tablet or smartphone with DVD Ripper Pro

I love that we live in a digital world where we can darn near summon up any movie or television show on our tablet or smartphone via Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Google, iTunes, Vudu or dozens of other services. What I don’t love is that I can’t do the same with the DVDs I own.

I mean sure, I can put a DVD in my DVD player in my living room and watch it on the television. But what if I want to watch it on my iPad or my smartphone? These things don’t exactly come with a built-in DVD player.

What’s illegal and what’s not?

The solution is to “rip” your DVDs to a digital file on your computer. This is a fancy way of saying you need to convert the movie on your DVD to a digital movie file that you can transfer to your other devices.

Only one problem. The DVD manufacturers don’t like when you do this. Because they are afraid you are going to rip your DVDs and then share them with others (which is illegal), they put all kinds of security measures on their DVDs to stop you from doing this.

What isn’t illegal, however, is ripping a DVD to a digital file for your own personal use. In other words, you are free to convert your DVD to a digital file and then transfer that file to your tablet or smartphone so you can enjoy the same movie on these devices.

Or store all of your movies in a Dropbox or Google Drive account so you can access your entire movie collection wherever you have an Internet connection.

Tested with the LEGO Batman Movie

I recently received the LEGO Batman Movie on DVD and put DVD Ripper Pro to the test with my new DVD. It took less than 10 minutes (I used high quality which takes a little longer) and DVD Ripper Pro perfectly recognized the main title of the movie and converted it to an mp4 file which I promptly added to my digital movie collection.
