How do I get rid of this error message? [ASK MR. NOOBIE]

Error signQUESTION: A box popped up on my laptop, “Intel Turbo Boost Technology Monitor 2.0 stopped working”. I didn’t know what to do and a friend suggested rebooting my laptop. I closed the lid several times but each time I opened the lid the box was still there. How do I get rid of it? – Charlotte W. from Miramar, Florida

ANSWER: The advice your friend gave you was pretty good advice. Usually when an error like this pops up (what you described as a “box”), something has run amok with a program running on your computer and the error window you see is just your computer’s way of telling you what happened. Unfortunately, your computer tells you little to nothing about how you can fix the problem.

As cliche as it is, rebooting usually fixes the problem because it gives your computer a fresh start (pun intended). The real problem is how you thought you were rebooting. Closing the lid on a laptop does not power it down. Rather, it puts it into a sort of sleep state waiting for you to open the lid again so you can resume right where you left off. That’s why the error message never went away.

Instead, click your Start button and find the option to Shut Down or Restart your computer. If that doesn’t work, just press and hold the power button until you hear the laptop power off. Then press the power button again to restart it.

Hopefully, this is a one-off situation that won’t happen again. But if it repeats over and over then that’s a sign there is probably a conflict somewhere that is preventing a software program from running correctly. Unless your a techie, it’s probably time to call a professional or take your computer to a local repair shop.
