Is there a GPS app to track steep grades?

steep gradeQUESTION: Does the Rand McNally app address steep grades? – Patricia R. from Sioux Falls, South Dakota

ANSWER: I assume you are referring to the blog post I wrote a little over a year ago about the Rand McNally RV GPS app in response to the person asking me about an app that can track low bridge heights. If that’s the case, I revisited what this app can and can’t do and, as far as I can tell, it will not track steep grades like you want.

That being said, I did a little digging to see if I could find another app that might do what you want. I think I found one. It’s called Truck Stops & Travel Plazas and, while it it designed more for truckers, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be just as useful for someone traveling in an RV.

Among the dozens of things this app can track, it lists “Road grades and Runaway truck ramps” as part of its “What’s In It?” description. I’m not 100% sure how this works but it sounds like you should be able to apply steep grades as a filter which would then plan a route for you while avoiding any steep grades.

The app costs $9.99 and has pretty good ratings. If you end up giving it a try, please follow-up with me and let me know if it does what you want.
