Has texting replaced voice calls?

Just Pick Up The Phone!

If you wanted to tell your friend that your dinner reservation changed from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm, would you call her or text her? What if she needed to tell you that she was running 20 minutes behind. Would you rather she call you or text you?

For many people, texting has completely replaced the need for the telephone (voice calls). Good or bad, it’s usually easier for people to send a quick text than it is to get bogged down into a unnecessarily long telephone conversation.

It’s also quicker. In my opening example, what if you had to tell five people that your dinner reservation time had changed? What would be easier, a group text to those five people or calling all five of them individually?

But voice calling isn’t dead yet

That being said, the infographic below shows that voice calling isn’t dead yet. In fact, only 31% of people prefer texts to phone calls vs. 53% who prefer a voice call to a text message. For the record, I’m in the 31%.

The infographic also shows how easy it is to misinterpret someone’s communication when it is delivered via text. Often what takes 7 or 8 back and forth text messages could be completed in just a few seconds when talking to someone on the phone.

So what’s your preference? Texting or calling? Does it matter whether you are the sender or receiver? Let me know what you think in the comment section following the infographic.
