Looxcie makes POV recording simple and easy [REVIEW]

Looxcie 2Ever watch one of those videos where you can see whatever someone else is seeing? Often they are walking down the street or riding their bike. These are called point-of-view or POV videos and there are several cameras you can use to film them.

One such camera is called the Looxcie and is about the size of a USB thumb stick. It’s so small in fact, you can just clip it around your ear (using one of the loop attachments that comes with it) and wear it like you would a Bluetooth headset.

Not to be outdone by others, when I first received my demo version of the Looxcie from Verizon Wireless (they sell them at their stores), I made my own POV video. Ok, my son made it while riding his Razor PowerWing but I helped him rig the Looxcie camera up to his helmet. Here’s the result:

Note: The Looxcie camera I tested is called the Looxcie 2 and produces only 480p quality standard definition video. Looxcie also offers the Looxcie HD which, while similar in style, now records in full 1080p high definition video.

How the Looxcie works

The Looxcie camera can be used in several ways. The easiest (in my opinion) is to use it as a standalone video camera. To do this, you just turn the Looxcie on, attach it to something (or just carry it in your hand), hit the record button and start recording. After you stop recording, the resulting video is stored as a file on the Looxcie’s built-in memory and can be accessed or copied by connecting the Looxcie to a PC via a USB connection just like you would a USB thumb stick.

Alternatively, you can install the Looxcie app (iOS or Android) for your smartphone and extend the functionality of the Looxcie. For example, you can use the app to “see” what the Looxcie camera sees and control the starting and stopping of the recording through the app. If you’re really ambitious you can use the app to set up live streaming or connect your videos to Facebook.

Attach it to more than just your ear

As I mentioned earlier, the Looxcie comes with everything you need to clip it on to your ear and start recording. But with some additional accessories, you can easily attach it to other surfaces like your car’s windshield or your bike’s handlebars.

Personally, I would recommend finding the right accessory as I found the ear loop attachment to be a bit funky. I eventually got used to it but I think it would be more fun to attach the Looxcie to a bike helmet so you could record the beautiful scenery around you—without becoming part of it.

Note: The Looxcie 2 in this review was provided to me by Verizon Wireless and can be purchased at your local Verizon Wireless store or at www.verizonwireless.com.
