My own private phone number

The other day I received an e-mail solicitation from NetZero for a private phone number. The idea intrigued me and so did the price (nada, nothing) so I decided to give it a try. The premise of the private phone is to have a phone number that is always answered by voice mail. You can choose to record your own greeting if you so desire.

Once someone leaves a message, you can tailor your private phone as to how it will alert you. You can be alerted by e-mail or have a text message sent to your phone. You can even log in to the private phone web site to check and listen to your messages online.

Since signing up, I have recorded my own voice mail greeting, set up delivery notifications to both e-mail and my cell phone and left myself a test message. It worked as promised.

I’m not sure how and what I’ll use this phone number for going forward but it just seemed like something fun to sign up for. Perhaps there is a business use here for people who don’t want to pay for a separate business line. You can give out your private phone number and then call people back on your own phone at your convenience.

Time will tell on this one.
