Go Green with Econofont

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Econofont converts the text in your document to an ink-saving equivalent. The result is the same exact look as the font on your screen, but with significantly fewer pixels actually printed.

I use fonts on the documents I create to evoke emotion. Big, bold fonts to grab attention. Straight, blocky fonts when referring to text on a computer screen. But I’ve never used a font to be environmentally friendly. Until now.

Why is Typography Important?

Typography is important because it can help create a mood and tone for the reader.

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible. It can be used to convey meaning or evoke an emotional response from readers. Typography is one of the most important aspects of design, and it helps people read the text more efficiently, and with greater comprehension.

How to Choose the Perfect Typeface for Your Project

The typeface of a text is one of the most important aspects of its design. The typeface can be used to convey different moods or to highlight certain qualities of the text.

Typefaces are generally divided into two categories: serif and sans-serif. Serif fonts have small lines at the end of strokes that make letters more readable in print. Sans-serif fonts, on the other hand, do not have these lines and are best used in digital media because they show up clearer on screens and when printed.

As you might already know, there are a ton of fonts to choose from these days. But, there’s nothing quite like Econofont. Econofont is the result of a project by SPRANQ whose goal was to see how much of a letter can be removed while still maintaining readability.

20% Less Ink

According to the Econofont website, the results were as follows: “After extensive testing with all kinds of shapes, the best results were achieved using small circles. After lots of late hours (and coffee), this resulted in a font that uses up to 20% less ink. Free to download, free to use.”

How does Econofont save ink? Well, according to the FAQ on their website, “Just before printing, Ecofont unnoticeably converts all letters and characters in your document into an ink-saving equivalent of those letters and characters. This looks exactly the same as the font you use on your screen, but with significantly less pixels actually printed. These so called ‘holes’ are hardly recognised by the human brain, and therefore the quality of the print is still exactly the way you were used to.”
