Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet Review

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet

The Xperia Z2 Tablet is Sony’s latest entry into the Android tablet marketplace. It boasts a 10.1″ display at a full HD 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution. Under the hood is a quad-core Snapdragon processor running at 2.3 GHz and it runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

Now that I have those details out of the way, let’s talk about what makes the Sony Xperia Z2 stand out from other tablets. For starters, the Xperia Z2 is only 6.4mm thick making it slightly thinner than Apple’s thinnest iPad, the iPad Air, which is 7.5mm thick. Keep in mind, however, that even though the Xperia Z2 is thinner, the 10.1″ display size can still make it feel pretty big in your hands.

Waterproof and dustproof

Aside from physical dimenions, what really makes the Xperia Z2 Tablet stand out from the competition is that it is waterproof (up to 4.9 feet of water for 30 minutes) and dustproof. Some people even go as far as to say the Xperia Z2 makes for the perfect cooking companion since you can set it on your kitchen countertop with your favorite recipe on the display and, if you make a mess while cooking, you can just rinse off the tablet using the kitchen faucet when you’re done. While this may be true, I would never willingly douse a tablet of any kind (even a waterproof one) under the kitchen faucet. Call me crazy.

Memory and storage

Because the Xperia Z2 Tablet I reviewed was from Verizon, it has a few extra goodies. It has 32 GB of memory (expandable to 128 GB with a microSD card) instead of 16 GB and it has 4G LTE capability baked right in. Verizon also states that the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is XLTE ready when this technology starts becoming more mainstream.

The Xperia Z2 Tablet has an 8.1 megapixel rear camera and a 2.2 megapixel front camera. While the 8.1 megapixel camera eclipses the iPad’s 5 megapixel camera, I just don’t see the Xperia Z2 (or any tablet for that matter) being actively used as a camera. If you’re one of those people taking pictures with your tablet, it’s time to invest in a better smartphone or a standalone digital camera.

Sony goodies

I’m not sure how long this will last but, as of this writing, the Xperia Z2 Tablet comes with 90 days of free music streaming and six free downloadable movies from Sony. You can get these by signing up for a free Sony account and using the voucher code supplied to you.

Also, because Sony is also the creator of the PlayStation consoles, the Xperia Z2 includes a PlayStation app which you can use as a second console or to buy PlayStation games and push them to your console.

Incipio Lexington case

The Xperia Z2 I tested from Verizon included an Incipio Lexington case. The hard shell folio case (with vegan leather exterior) fit beautifully and didn’t add any excessive bulk to the Xperia Z2’s footprint.

Additionally, the Incipio Lexington case includes what they call a buckling closure which both holds the cover securely in place when you are traveling with the Xperia Z2 and holds the tablet securely in place when you use the cover to double as a stand.

Note: The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet and Incipio Lexington case in this review were provided to me by Verizon Wireless and can be purchased at your local Verizon Wireless store or at
