Tauren Solar Powered Wireless Outdoor Speaker Review

Tauren Solar Powered Wireless Outdoor Speaker

One of the biggest downsides to using a portable Bluetooth speaker is that eventually it runs low on battery and needs to be charged. Depending on the size of the speaker, this can take several hours to complete. That’s a long time without your music.

This is precisely the problem the Tauren Solar Powered Wireless Outdoor Speaker aims to fix. It does so by attaching a small solar panel on the back of the speaker. Anytime the solar panel is exposed to light, it automatically charges the battery.

While this is a great feature, it does better when you are frequently outside listening to music. I guess that’s why they call it an “outdoor” speaker, huh? Also, the solar charging is relatively slow so I wouldn’t rely on it for your sole source of charging. Luckily, the speaker still has the traditional USB port for charging the old fashioned way.

Other features

Overall, the sound quality of the speaker was okay. It’s not the biggest speaker so don’t expect room-filling sound with it. But if you’re outside and want to hear music louder than you can hear on your smartphone, the Tauren Solar Powered Wireless Outdoor Speaker does the trick.

The buttons on the front are very easy to use and have a mouse-click like feel to them which makes it easy to know when you have correctly pressed a button.

There’s also a loop at the top of the speaker that you can use to connect the included carabiner to your backpack, belt loop or whatever else you are carrying with you at the time. Again, this speaks to the outdoor nature of this speaker.

Besides using the Bluetooth pairing, you can use a microSD card to listen to music without the need for a paired smartphone. One thing notably missing, however, is the auxiliary port for connecting your own source of music.

Some oddities

Couple of odd things I discovered. The Bluetooth pairing name for the speaker is “2693”. This isn’t the most intuitive name but on my phone, I can rename the Bluetooth connections so I renamed it to “Tauren” which is much more easily recognized.

I also didn’t like the fact that the blue light on the front of the speaker slow blinks the entire time you are listening to music. I’m not sure if this wears down the battery quicker but regardless, it just sort of annoyed me. Plus a blinking light makes me think I need to take action of some sort.

The Tauren Solar Powered Wireless Outdoor Speaker can also double as a speakerphone when paired to your smartphone but I found the volume levels a little low and difficult to hear.

Finally, the manual said the speaker used voice prompts to guide you but I never heard any voice prompts. I did hear audible tones so maybe they switched from voice prompts to the tones in some iteration of the speaker’s design.
