Hello, this is Patric Welch, otherwise known as Mr. Noobie®. And this is the Weekly Wrap-up with Mr. Noobie for Friday, October 28th, 2011.

There’s a new book on the market called Steve Jobs. No, it’s not an autobiography like you might think. Instead it’s a book based on more than 40 interviews with Steve Jobs conducted over two years. I’ve heard lots of good things about this book and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. Jobs never even asked for the rights to read the book before it was published so this “nothing off-limits” approach should make for a good read.

Redbox announced they will be raising the prices on their standard 1-night DVD rentals from $1.00 to $1.20 effective October 31st. This has a lot of people up in arms and claiming that Redbox is making the same huge pricing mistake Netflix recently made. I say big deal. $1.20 is still an incredible value for 2 hours of entertainment. And besides, 10 years ago I was paying Blockbuster $3-4/night to rent a movie. I don’t mean to sound arrogant but at my 5 rentals per month average, an extra 20 cents per movie isn’t going to put that big of a dent in my wallet.

DIRECTV has a new upgrade for its iPad app that allows you to watch live TV on your iPad. I have been waiting for this for a long time and can’t wait to try it out. Only one problem. My DIRECTV receivers aren’t connected to my home network. But don’t worry. I’ve got a call in to DIRECTV already to take care of that. And I’m sure I’ll have a video demonstration of this in the coming weeks.

On the smart phone scene, Verizon recently announced the Galaxy Nexus by Samsung will be available on its network by the end of the year. This will be Verizon’s first smart phone running the new Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. As soon as I get my hands on one, I’ll give a full review.

And finally, with Halloween just a few days away, I thought it would be fun to share a few unique pumpkin carvings I found while browsing the popular Mashable website. First up, a couple of browser pumpkins. That’s Firefox on the left and Internet Explorer on the right. Next up, is a simple but effective RSS pumpkin. If you’ve never seen an RSS icon on a website, you might struggle recognizing this one. And finally, my favorite, the Android pumpkin. Not just because I own an Android-based phone but more because I just love that little Android guy.

That’s it for this week’s edition of the Weekly Wrap-up with Mr. Noobie®. I’m Patric Welch, otherwise known as Mr. Noobie, and I’ll see you next week.
