When buying computer speakers, save some money by sticking to the basics

A client of mine recently had a pair of computer speakers go out on her. She told me she wanted to replace them but didn’t want to spend a lot of money on new ones. I did a quick search on Amazon and noticed that Amazon now sells their own brand of computer speakers.

The brand is AmazonBasics and I’ve been buying their brand a lot lately. Usually, it’s a USB charging cable, a USB printer cable or an HDMI cable so I was surprised to see that they now have computer speakers.

AmazonBasics USB Powered Computer Speakers

The AmazonBasics USB Powered Computer Speakers had over 900 reviews averaging 4.5 stars and they were only $13.99 so I figured we had nothing to lose. I ordered the speakers and a few days later when they arrived, I hooked them up to her computer.

Better than I expected

Quite honestly, the sound was better than I expected. Much better. In fact, the sound is more than adequate for listening to music or watching videos on the computer. Of course, if you are an audiophile, you are not going to be happy with a $14 pair of speakers so these aren’t for you. They’re for the rest of us.

Another benefit is that they don’t require any AC power. Instead, they are powered via a USB port on your computer. This may not seem like a big deal but it is if your computer is a laptop and you want to hook speakers up to it when you’re not near a power outlet.

Of course, if you are bent on having AC power, AmazonBasics has an AC powered set of speakers for about $6 more.

These speakers are my new go-to set of speakers for anyone just looking for some decent and basic sound for their computer. Which just so happens to be about 99% of the people I work with.
