Who is going to be the first to provide a la carte programming?

There are so many choices for television today it can make your head spin. You can watch free broadcast networks over the air. You can pay for service from your local cable company or a satellite service such as DIRECTV or DISH Network. And now fiber-optic providers such as AT&T U-verse and Verizon FIOS are starting to make a splash in the market.

What I find interesting is that despite the number of choices I have, not a one of these gives me exactly what I want–a la carte programming. I dream of a company, or perhaps an Internet site, that will allow me to pay for only the programming I want, and nothing else. No packages. No bundles. Just the channels I want.

Here’s my dream package (all in high definition please):

  • My local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS broadcasts
  • ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classic and ESPN U
  • Big Ten Network
  • NFL Network
  • Disney Channel
  • Nickelodeon

I might consider adding these down the road (listed in no particular order or preference):

  • Comedy Central
  • CNN or Fox News Channel
  • TBS
  • TNT
  • Food Network
  • Discovery Channel
  • E! Entertainment Television
  • The Weather Channel (my local weather, not a national feed like DIRECTV offers)

Who’s with me on this? Am I the only one that wants this? What channels would make up your dream a la carte package? Leave a comment and let me know.
