Your smartphone can connect to the Internet using both Wi-Fi and cellular. If you’re not careful though, one of these could cost you a lot more than the other.

Hi, I’m Mr. Noobie and today I’m going to explain why you should choose Wi-Fi over cellular.

Reduce the possibility of additional bandwidth charges

Most home Internet providers offer a large amount of bandwidth, sometimes even unlimited, with your monthly package. Cellular providers, on the other hand, more tightly limit the amount of data you can use on their network before you begin paying extra. So by using Wi-Fi as often as possible, you are reducing the possibility of having to pay additional bandwidth charges.

Faster speeds

Another reason to stick with Wi-Fi is speed. While 4G speeds from your cellular company may feel fast, speeds from your home wireless router running the latest wireless standards will provide much higher speeds, especially when you subscribe to a mid-level Internet package or higher from your Internet Service Provider.

Maximize your Wi-Fi usage

In order to maximize your Wi-Fi usage on your smartphone, make sure that when you connect to your home Wi-Fi network, the option to remember the network is checked. That way when you leave your house and lose your Wi-Fi connection, your smartphone will automatically re-connect to your Wi-Fi network when you return home.

You’ll also want to look for public Wi-Fi networks when you travel such as the ones provided by the hotel you are staying at or the local coffee shop down the street. Just be sure to double-check the name of the public Wi-Fi network with the owner to make sure you are connecting to the right network. Alternatively, your home Internet Service Provider may offer its own Wi-Fi hotspots around town.

Of course, if you are lucky enough to have an unlimited data plan from your cellular provider, cost won’t be a factor but you should still take advantage of the faster Wi-Fi speeds whenever possible.
