How do I stop iMessage from locking up on my iPad? [ASK MR. NOOBIE]

Ask Mr. NoobieQUESTION: I am having problems with iMessage locking up on my iPad. Have you had any experience troubleshooting that? The message will try to go… status bar will move over about 90% of the way and then just hang until I get a message send failure. I usually do some hard reboots, reset network settings, turn it off and leave it be overnight and then it will start back working properly. Just annoying that it keeps happening. Any ideas? – Susan H. from Milledgeville, Georgia

ANSWER: I have never experienced the iMessage problem you are having, Susan. However, after doing some research on the problem you are describing it seems plenty of others have.

The solutions seem to vary but the one that more than a few said worked for them was this:

  1. Make sure that Messages is tuned on (Settings > Messages > iMessage).
  2. Tap Settings > Messages and turn iMessage off and back on again.
  3. Make sure that your Apple ID or phone number is listed in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
  4. Restart your device by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button, then toggle the “slide to power off” slide. To turn the device back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  5. If nothing above works, try changing your DNS settings as described here.

Hopefully, one of the steps above will fix your problem. If not, I encourage you to do a Google search for a phrase like “ipad imessage never sends” and browse through some of the search results, specifically any from the Apple Support Communities.

If something I mentioned fixes your problem, be sure to follow-up with me and I will update this blog post with your feedback. Good luck!
