Is the telephone just for special occasions now?

I remember when I was a kid, getting a letter from someone in the mail was the highlight of my day. Heck, probably the highlight of my month! That’s because I didn’t get them that often so when I did, I knew someone really had put forth the effort and time to reach out to me.

I can’t help but wonder if today’s equivalent is the telephone.

I mean it’s so easy to email, text, Skype, FaceTime, chat with someone or to just post something on their Facebook page, so why bother calling them? Ah, but there are those times when you know something is important enough or urgent enough that it’s best handled over the phone.

So that begs the question, is the telephone just for special occasions now?

Have you ever caught yourself saying, “Whoa, she actually called me!”, or how about, “That was really nice that he called me special to wish me a happy birthday”? If so, I’m guessing the answer to the above question is yes.

What do you think? Is receiving a phone call the modern day of equivalent of receiving a personal letter 30 years ago? Let me know what you think in the comments.
