When packing for a vacation or planning a move, whether that be with a NYC moving company or a DIY move, there is always the question of how to get your precious gadgets to the destination in one piece.

And for good reason.

Items like laptops, tablets, cameras, vaping devices, and other electronics are not only a fragile carry, but also most cost a dime, and replacing them can be an absolute bummer.

It is thus imperative to find ways to pack your gadgets in a manner that will ensure they remain unscathed throughout the journey.

Here are 5 tips that should prove handy to that end.

Disconnect Any Temperature-sensitive Accessories From the Electronics

Electronics tend to be highly sensitive to sudden changes in temperature and do not react well to extreme temperature values.

Always make it a point of disconnecting all temperature-sensitive accessories such as hard drives, pen drives, and other peripheral devices before packing them. The battery should be the first to go out.

Pack Your Gadgets in Anti-static Bubble Wrap

When preparing for a move, invest in some sheets of anti-static bubble wrap to protect your gadgets against static electricity which could fry your electronics. The wrap also doubles up as a cushion against any potential impact or drops.

If the electronics are being moved in a box, line up the box with the bubble wrap, then cover each device with soft packing paper before securing each item with tape and placing it in the box.

The heavier items should go to the bottom first, and make sure the items do not shift inside.

Add another layer of bubble wrap on top before sealing the box.

And don’t forget to label it FRAGILE!

When Traveling…

The best way to pack your gadgets when traveling remains a bone of contention and the answer really depends on who you ask.

So, what is the right way to travel with your gadgets considering you will not be toting a box around with you?

Well, it is perfectly fine to keep these fragile items in a bag. However, the key here is to put them in your carry-on as opposed to the checked luggage – assuming the item in question is allowed in checked luggage.

The latter not only exposes the items to potential damage, but there is always the risk of theft as well.

If you move around a lot, consider investing in an electronics accessories bag, of which you’ll find plenty of options to choose from. Otherwise, a nicely padded bag or pouch will do.

It is okay to mix up clothes and electronics (they provide an additional layer of protection anyway) but avoid any liquids and sensitive items that should never mix with electronic gadgets.

Pack Your Gadgets Neatly and Efficiently

As commonplace as it may sound, always pack your gadgets in a neat and efficient fashion particularly when traveling.

You never know when your bag will be singled out for scrutiny by the security personnel. In the event that happens, you want the bag layered neatly so that it becomes easier to figure out what each item is without the need to take everything out.

Roll up the wires nicely to keep them neat, using some sort of band to tie them up together.

Organize and Label the Cables

This is a tip that should save you time and frustration when packing gadgets for moving, especially if electronic cabling is not your cup of tea.

Invest in some numbered tags, colored stickers, and tape, or other alternative markers you can use to label all the cables as you disconnect them.

Also, instead of throwing all cables and other accessories in a single box, consider placing them alongside their respective gadgets.
