Sometimes low tech solutions can still make you feel high tech

The other day I walked into a HotBox Pizza and placed my order. As the gentleman rung up my total, I flashed him a Groupon on my smartphone that knocked $10 off my bill. The whole process was painless and I never had to carry around a coupon with me.

This was all possible because a few weeks ago I bought a HotBox Groupon online from my computer. Groupon then digitally stored my coupon in my account which I was able to access via the Groupon app on my smartphone. All very high tech.

But sometimes you have to step back and appreciate the low tech side of things. Like the Chili’s coupon I received via email the other day. I didn’t think much of it until I saw the words “Show this coupon on your smartphone” below the coupon. Not knowing how this was supposed to work I read the fine print.

That’s when I found the words “just take a screenshot.” No app. No fussing with finding the right email. Instead, just snap a photo of the coupon using your phone’s camera and then show the photo to your server at the restaurant.

Ok, so really low tech would have been printing out the coupon. But Chili’s sort of low tech still accomplishes the task without making it overly complicated. Well done.
