Flexible “squid” tripod for your smartphone or GoPro camera

Flexible Tripod with Bluetooth Remote Control

Selfie sticks are all the rage these days but there are still plenty of times when you want to take a nice group shot where a selfie stick just won’t do it. Better yet, a group shot with you in it!

The Flexible Tripod from GOMA might be your solution. Not only does it serve as the perfect mini tripod that you can pretty much carry with you anywhere, but it also has squid-like flexible legs that can wrap around things like poles, small tree branches and more. This gives you plenty of flexibility (yes, pun intended) when it comes to positioning your smartphone on the tripod.

Speaking of which, GOMA’s Flexible Tripod comes with a selfie stick-like spring clip that attaches to the top of the tripod. This should accommodate every regular-sized smarthone including the iPhone 4, 5 and 6 and the Samsung Galaxy line of phones.

The Flexible Tripod also comes with an attachment for a GoPro camera. Unfortunately, the GoPro camera isn’t included (we can dream, can’t we?)

My only beef with the Flexible Tripod

During my tests of the Flexible Tripod, I found it very easy to position and/or clamp on to things. That’s the good news. The bad news is that I never got the included Bluetooth remote control to work.

In fact, I couldn’t even get past the installation of the battery. Every time I placed the flat, round battery into the open compartment, a few lights would flash on the remote control. But as soon as I put the battery compartment cover on, it would stop working. Finally, after repeated attempts to get the battery in there just right, the lights stopped blinking altogether.

I contacted GOMA about this and, to their credit, they sent me not only a brand new remote control, but an entirely new Flexible Tripod. Pretty exciting except for the fact that I had the same exact issues with the remote control again. Now mind you, I’m pretty high on the scale of techie-ness so if I can’t figure this out, how is a noobie supposed to?

Good if you can do without the the remote control

The Flexible Tripod would have had my full recommendation had I not experienced the problems with the remote control. And the remote is the one part that ties everything together. After all, it’s how you take the actual picture when the tripod and your smartphone are more than an arms-length apart.

I still am going to use the Flexible Tripod. But I’ll use it with my smartphone’s self timer or I’ll use another Bluetooth shutter control I have to make it work. But for the remote control reason alone, I can’t personally recommend the Flexible Tripod to anyone else.
