Could Google Translate Sign Language Into Spoken Word?

Google Gesture concept video

I wish the Google service described in the video below was real but it’s not. At least for now.

The service, called Google Gesture, is a concept video that some students at the Berghs School of Communication came up with as a submission for a student competition.

The fictional Google Gesture service would allow a person who uses sign language to wear bands on each arm. These bands would track the muscle movement in each arm while the person is signing and translate it into spoken word.

Obviously, there is a lot of room for error here but the concept is still fantastic. And all great things started with a concept, right?
