There is still one feature missing from Apple’s iTunes

It took me a while to transition between purchasing CDs at a brick and mortar store to downloading digital copies from the iTunes Store. Now that I have, I find it difficult to come up with a reason why everyone wouldn’t do the same.

So why am I struggling with the new capability to download full-length movies from the iTunes Store? I think the reason is that Apple has not yet allowed anyone to burn DVDs from within the iTunes application. With music I have always been able to purchase an album in the iTunes Store and then burn my own CDs for playing in my living room stereo or in my car.

Apple’s answer to this right now is to purchase Apple TV. Which is fine if you have $329 lying around the house or if you never want your kids to watch your downloaded movies in your car. I don’t happen to qualify for either of those scenarios.

That’s what I love about the ability to burn CDs from my iTunes library. I can take that CD virtually anywhere and listen to it. It doesn’t matter that the music started out as a digital download. Better yet, if the CD gets scratched or otherwise unplayable, I can always just make another copy.

So until Apple decides to let me burn my own DVDs from my downloaded movies, I think I will pass at purchasing movies from the iTunes Store.
