Tips to make your website more mobile friendly

As recent figures suggest, more and more people are now accessing search engines from their mobile device than from a PC or laptop. To coincide with this, Google has updated their algorithm so that websites which are already mobile compatible are given more prominence than those which aren’t compatible with mobile devices.

Of course aside from web design there are many other ways in which you can make your website mobile-friendly, which will benefit you greatly in terms of traffic, return visitors and hopefully more revenue, whatever business you’re in.

Firstly, the best tip would be to look at any pop-ups on your site and consider removing them. A lot of sites have a pop-up ‘sign up here’ sheet which allows players to quickly sign up to a mailing list, become a member of a community or something similar. However these tend not to translate well to mobile, getting squashed in the screen so often players can’t click out of it, making it a bit off-putting and certainly not user friendly. A good tip would be to integrate a contact or sign up form into the page itself, so that players can easily enter in details if they wish, and are still free to roam around the rest of the mobile site.

Mobile Website vs. Standard Website

Another major tip would be to have your homepage populated with relevant and necessary tabs so that all information is easy to find on a mobile device. The general rule of thumb is that it shouldn’t take any more than 2 clicks or taps to reach what you’re looking for, so make sure that information and services are clearly labelled under the right tabs, without cluttering the homepage or making your mobile site a maze where customers have to spend time searching through tabs and menus to find what they need. A good example of sites that utilize this well when transferring to mobile are online gaming sites like bingo sites, casino sites etc. which have standard clear menus for games, promotions, banking options and help.

Finally another tip to consider is to cater your site to be mobile friendly from the outset and work the desktop version around this, rather than trying to mold an existing, possibly outdated, desktop site into a visually attractive and practical mobile site.

Follow these tips and you’re sure to have a mobile site that everyone will love.
