TiVo has come back to DIRECTV… and I don’t care

My very first DVR was a TiVo. Actually it was a blended TiVo / DIRECTV DVR affectionately referred to as a DIRECTiVo. It was arguably the greatest electronic device I ever owned. I praised it as often as I could and convinced many people to buy it.

But then TiVo and DIRECTV got in some sort of spat and they parted ways. Soon, I was forced to switch to a native DIRECTV DVR to get new features I wanted from DIRECTV.

Sure, I griped a bit at first but then grew to love the DIRECTV DVRs. With each new upgrade of the software, it just kept getting better. And now, I feel I have every bit of the features in my DIRECTV DVR that I previously had with my DIRECTiVo.

Well, guess who decided to kiss and make up?

DIRECTV TiVo is Back

You know what I say to this? Who cares? Big deal! And it’s too late!

To keep myself honest, I researched the features of the new DIRECTiVo (technically called the TiVo HD DVR from DIRECTV but I still like the other name better). As far as I can tell, the only features it has that I don’t have already on my native DIRECTV DVR are the TiVo Suggestions and the WishList Search. Nowhere near compelling enough reasons to switch.

And then I find this little nugget of info on the DIRECTV website:

Please note: The following DIRECTV features are not available with the TiVo HD DVR: Whole-Home DVR service, DIRECTV iPad App remote control and live TV streaming functionality, DIRECTV CINEMA (satellite downloads), YouTube on TV, 3D, and GameSearch®.

Ummm… hello? The Whole-Home DVR service is my most used feature followed closely by the iPad app functionality! Give up these to get suggestions and wish lists? No thank you.

TiVo, you were revolutionary in your day. But everyone else has caught up to you. Sorry.
